A long, hot afternoon against our former nemesis (look it up) - Mordialloc.
Wouldn't have been quite so long if, when came time to agree on match format,
and the visitors were happy to go with a tiebreak 3rd set option, Black Caviar
Hinneberg hadn't piped up and INSISTED on playing out the third set. Because
he hasn't played much tennis lately and he gets extra points at home if he's
out on the court as long as possible..
And if you believe that, put out milk and cookies for Santa now.
Poetry insisted that Nick and Vic play together.
Brian and Forrest - the team's senior citizens, called off the bench (again)
because The Golden Greeks were at Making Moussaka classes - found themselves
on Centre Court. And played appropriately, posting a straight-sets win with
minimum fuss.
Meanwhile, Nick and Vic prolonged their fun into a third set. Much to Nick's
obvious joy. But the lads came through with a victory.
Skipper (Ask Me About My Musical) Yuri arrived to find his side looking OK.
Having freed himself from cooking class, DK himself arrived. Great effort.
Also there was El Pres, Peter D. Thanks. Especially for those icy poles.
No, that's NOT you, Mark (Ask Me About That Linecall) Balicki.
Reverse rubbers: Brian and Forrest faltered. First set surrendered. But then
- channelling Nana Mouskouri - they came back and actually served to take
the match into one of those third sets Nick loves so much. Then got run over;
5-7.
Still, with Caviar and Dr Wilk running for everything, the ship was still
afloat.
But then, but then.... Opportunities slipped by, a tiebreak snuck past and,
yes, proving the tennis gods have a great sense of humour, it was another
third set.

On the sidelines, some maths revealed the match was close. Real close.
But the boys came through. Of course they did. 6-4 in the decider. Big thumbs-up
to Vic for holding firm at the death. And to Nick, for being there. And bringing
some fine coconut slices.
Hey - the old guys didn't do a bad Greek impression either.
So. Another victory. The sleeping giant is stirring.
STATE OF PLAY
After 3 big wins against strong opposition we are now back to the reverse rubbers playing the 7 opposition teams again.
Martha, Black Rock and Mornington will finish top 3. They are very strong and we need our strongest team on a good day to beat them. They're our next 3 opponents before the break.
The other 4 teams are all beatable. Indeed we've beaten them all except for the pillow biters which was a game we should have won. Bastards!
If we can win against these 4 again (Port, Modi, Highett and the Girls) in the LAST FOUR rounds of NEXT YEAR IN 2013 (a time traditionally when the greeks awake from their soporific slumber) we will make the finals.
