A new season. A new start. A new ruthlessness in selection policies. NOT
ONE of the quartet that fell in last season's Granny got a guernsey. Let
nobody tell you this was due to unavailability or chaps getting their nails
done or lack of motivation until the pointy end of the season. Oh no. There
is a new hard edge to Captain Yuri. So Nick, Dean, Dennis and Nosti ? ALL
OUT. Yuri, Alan, Mark (remember him?) and Vic ? IN.
On a day of weeping skies (ah, the poetry) the players assembled in damp conditions. But as the newbieopponents had come all the way from Mornington, leaving on Thursday to arrive
on time and still getting there BEFORE two of our finest, who just had to
roll out of bed to get to the courts ? there was never any chance of a washout.
Which, as things turned out, was a shame.
Mark and Vic demanded the Number One slot, but TV programmers insisted that
Yuri (as Captain) stayed on Centre Court. Great excitement for all of five
minutes or so as Yuri and Alan grabbed a 4-3 ascendancy in first set? and
then did precious little after that. They were just completing media commitments,
explaining the 6-4 6-2 defeat (?All part of the plan,? said Yuri), when Mark
and Vic were also seen shaking hands, vanquished 6-2 6-2.
Hmm? Is Mornington the new MCC?
Then the rain came. Real rain. Things looked up. Vic disappeared, ostensibly
to buy refreshments but possibly to seek solace from his ball-machine.
On we went. Yuri and Alan, disconcerted by being off Centre Court, went down
0 and 1. Which, in the scheme of things, was an improvement on Round One
last season.
Mark and Vic, meanwhile, battled valiantly and engaged in several spirited
rallies, thrilling the crowd of ONE. Yes, ONE. And he's not even a team-member.
All hail Peter Keddie, now officially Number One Supporter.
Mark and Vic went down 3 and 2. Still, Mark declared it much more fun than
child-minding. And both have one match under belts for finals eligibility.
All in all, a splendid start. It is now traditional, almost compulsory, to lose the first round. Which means we are well and truly on our way.

HOUSE KEEPING
Thanks Alan for the bodacious match report. You're realy the only wun of uz that can wrighte!
We have only one objection to the 12 point tie-break after 1 set all and that's from Mark. And that was just because he wanted to be contrary given his lowly status and complete lack of self esteem.
Everyone else thought it was a good idea. So that's it for the rest of the season but captains MUST agree before the match starts
As you can see on the left we have 3 "new" white balls given to us by Lou Prelli (he's the man) and as a treat on Summer 2013 Trophy night (the Thursday after the last game) let's have a tennis retro 70s shindig stoned groove and get out your petulia oil, wooden racquets (thx Nick), headbands, short shorts, mustaches (Brian come as you are) and old fashioned sexist attitudes (Mark come as you are).
A 70s team photo and a hit with the white balls would be groooovey!
It's the best time for a team pic so lets all aim at one in 70s gear at 7.30 at the club Thursday after the season.
