Roosters in the Hood + Moneyball

from little things big things crow

Why start off with the Moneyball trailer?

A story about using statistics (like, say the 2 top ranked players in the whole comp last winter) rather than past reputation to pick a winning team. You'll have to read on roosters.

First, last Saturday:

On a hot dusty patch of outer suburbia more suited to dumping a body than tennis the roosters elite were given a tennis lesson by two wily and well match opponents.

It's not often that our no.1 pair, Deano and Nick get beaten up in straight sets. This was their fate in game 1 against Patterson Lakes top team who were very, very good.

The champs rallied to win their next game but it was too late to stop a 3:1 route. Nosti and Alan did their best but went down losing both their sets. We share their pain. Special thanks to Nick's young family for coming such a long way.

We stand in a rather precarious position. Before last Saturday this was the ladder (above).
Half a point ahead of Mordi and two and a half ahead of Mentone. I doubt if both lost last Saturday and we are most likely out of the four. We MUST win next week.

We play Mordialloc at home on Saturday and the good news is that a win would deny the points to make the four. Unfortunately they can do the same to us and they were our Grand Final nemesis last winter.

So, speaking of the winter comp and linking our Moneyball theme for the week any guesses as who the 2 top performing players in the comp were ? Mordi no.1, Piri?, Yvgeny? Nick?, a Greek?

Here's the stats (that don't lie)

Go figure. The top 2 ranked players in the whole competition of 50 players for the last season were Roosters. Amazing.

Nick and Dean? No!

Drumroll....Nosti and Yuri....tish.... huh?

As you can see Neale was 47th from 50 so that's about right.

So the guy who has a pretty ordinary style, that's a fair serve and the iron curtain at the net also wins his fair share of games.

Consequently next weeks team may (or may not) being sorted using Brad Pit's statistical method.  The team will be announced @ practice on Thursday night 6.30 as usual.

Old school reputations are sooo yesterday.
Congratulations to self-exiled disgraced former Captain Rooster Mark on having a third "chick".

Stay Tuned roosters and come along Saturday 1pm for our last home game for the Summer.
