MATCH REPORT TAKE 2

Albert Park v Port Melbourne at Home, 2 Feb 2013-02-03

Yo – Bruce McAvaney! Yes, you with the useless statistics. The summer of tennis is NOT over. Proof of that could be found at the Nursing Home on Saturday when gentlemen assembled for the resumption of Bayside’s 2012-13 season. No Courier or Lleyton in the bunker, but plenty of sunshine for the keenly-awaited local derby, Roosters v Port.

Roosters on hand were Captain Yuri, Caviar Nick (also making a cameo at Caulfield,), Newly Married Mark (congrats!) and Forrest. Mark managed to arrive after all the opposition. Nick found himself off Centre Court, which was a surprise, the host broadcaster having decided a Pole and a Scot on the same side of the net was as compelling as Murray and Djokovic facing off.

With a healthy crowd on hand – thanks to Michael and Michael, President Peter, Jacqui and Joy – the Roosters got off to an impressive start, Yuri and Nick prevailing in straight sets, Mark and Forrest also winning after employing some odd tactics: winning the first, sleeping through the second, falling waaaay behind in the deciding tiebreak and then storming home to prevail 13-11. Roosters had Port perplexed.

And then… Then things got complicated. As Andy Murray discovered a week earlier, an early lead sometimes doesn’t count for much.

In the reverse rubbers, Port got their combined noses in front. Caviar had work to do… Meanwhile, Mark and Forrest were doing it all over again: winning the first; slumping in the second; and then – oh no, could it really be happening? – falling behind in the tiebreak. Oh, the tension... Then two crucial things happened:

First, Yuri made a dash for the clubhouse in search of a new ball. (For the match, not his shorts.) Having found ball, he tossed it across Court 1 JUST AS MARK FINALLY FIRED IN A FIRST-SERVE ROCKET DEEP IN THE DECIDING TIEBREAK. Ah, you really had to be there… The point was replayed. Roosters lost it, of course. From the far court, Nick could just be heard: “That was actually quite funny.” Mark didn’t think so.

Meanwhile, Jolly Neale had rocked up. This was crucial. Mark and Forrest, then in a deep hole, realised that if they crumbled Nils would never let them forget it. So the boys bounced back. At 8-11, a match-point was saved. Then another. And one more. Port’s Big John was feeling the pinch. Eleven all! Twelve all! As the other match finished.

Nobody had done the sums, but the Court 1 result was clearly crucial. And then, and then… Ah, Bruce Mac would have loved it. Mark and Forrest won 14-12. The Roosters won 3 rubbers to 1. Great team effort. 

Rebecca arrived to find grown men weeping in happiness. Well, perhaps it was just the smoke from the barbie.

On we go. Unbeaten in 2013.


Well done Roosters I believe we are now in the four and the spot's ours to keep. Don't forget after round 3 we were winless and bottom. We play Highett, Glenhuntly and Mordy for the last 3 games and they are very beatable. We also have Deano back for the last two games!
