So it all came down to this: last round, away, against our old enemy, Mordialloc, who have caused us some grief in the past. The maths was simple (assuming, that is, that maths is EVER simple): one rubber had to be won to ensure a finals spot.

Away from the venue, Skipper Yuri and Caviar Nick waited restlessly by their morse-code machines.

Up for the challenge were Dr Vic and Brian B – who share this seasons’s Sun Smart award  for Most Sensible (If Not Stylish) Headwear – Dennis “Death Stare” K – who prepared for this vital match by playing golf and schmoozing with corporates the previous day (anyone ever hear of Novak doing that?) – and Forrest, rejoicing in having TWO knees that actually worked.

Conditions were challenging. Hot: again. Welcome visitors Deano and Debbie sensibly stayed in the shade. Deano relaxed considerably after an anxious few Brian-less minutes when it was suggested HE might have to play on wonky ankle.

Into it. Early signs good. First sets in both first matches went to rampant Roosters. But then… Dennis and BB fell behind. So did Doc and Forrest. Hmm. Suddenly that equation didn’t look so simple. Then Death Stare and BB were bagging their court. One-set all on Centre Court.

Doc and Forrest conferred: “Those other two are stuffing around. Let’s do it here and now.” So they did. Staging a comeback then staying solid for a 6-4 6-3 win for that Golden Point.

Back in the shade, Yuri had joined D and D. Yuri’s fingernails were a disgrace. On Doc and Forrest’s return his cry of “Well?” was tragically plaintive. On hearing the result, the Ukrainian genes came to the fore. Tears and hugs.

Quite something to see a grown man break down like this. Oh the relief for a Skipper. Deano nodded sagely, making it clear it was all in his camera. Never in doubt.

Then it just got better. DK and BB won in three.

Never mind finals…. Suddenly the Roosters were aiming at a huge percentage boost.

Until, that is, Forrest and Doc returned to the court. Worn out by an exhausting round of media interviews – Fox Sports having cut into regular programming to report the Roosters’ triumph – the old guys allowed Mordy a single point. And saved themselves for another day. Their work here was done.

But not the Number One pair. No charity from them. A straight sets triumph to finish the home-and-away season. Death Stare and BB were even talking to each other again.

Result: Roosters win 3 rubbers to 1; six sets to three; 43 games to 40.

Skipper ALONE to select team.
