MATCH REPORT

Glenhuntly Girls V Roosters
Saturday 16th February 2013

by: the Krafty Kraut

The Roosters entered this home game on a high having had a surprisingly narrow but much needed victory last round over Highett. But there was anxiety in the Rooster ranks as Glenhuntly have earned a reputation over the years for being wily to overcome – today would be no different.

First order of agenda was for Nick to remain in the shade of the club house and work out how he could do more of this throughout the whole day.  The answer then came when fearless captain, comrade Yuri reminded him that we’d asked Glenhuntly last time we played to play a tie-break in substitute of a 3rd set and they’d refused.

This time, as the mercury was reaching 35 and our bodies being deep into the season and on home soil, the Roosters would be more insistent.

With only 3 of Glenhuntly’s boys in attendance by 1.15pm and a robust democracy in place, the vote for best of 2 plus tie-breaker went through and the Roosters were away. Nosti and DKNY (the “NY” standing for “not yet” in reference to the rumours that Dennis is retiring any day given the amount of strapping on both knees), put on a superlative display dominating their match and emerging with a straight sets victory.

Yuri and Nick found the going a bit tougher with fearless leader serving into the sun and needing a miracle in a dark room, to hit any returning ball. The battle was fierce and was finely balanced with a set a piece. With a steady supply of tears of joy and beads of sweat, we were kept well hydrated for the deciding tiebreaker. Momentum can be a funny thing and just as it appeared to desert us, we were reunited with it winning 10-3.

2 rubbers to zip heading into the reverse.

ego is not a dirty bird

It got so hot, mirages began to appear all over the club – a saw a 50’ TV in the club house, a swimming pool alongside court 2 and several more Swedish backpackers from our last home round sun baking in the park. (Kneel promised the team he would find them and bring them back up from St.Kilda, but he never made it back.)

With more discussion at half time over match fixing and drugs in sport than the tennis at hand, we began the reverse dubs. This time is was Yuri and Nick that found the going easier winning in straight sets and quickly retreated back to the sanctuary of the clubhouse shade, but the club champs were doing it tough. Having lost the first set 5-7, the boys matched it game for game until they reached a tie-breaker. You could tell our fearless comrade captain was thinking semi-finals, as he urged the boys on to victory including informing Dennis at a change of ends that “he could not talk to chicks during the match” – aka, conversing with Zo.

Krautfoot: a very rare condition
My take on the matter, the poor captain, suffering from sun blindness must have been seeing his own mirages Rooster families invading the pitch. Or was intoxicated from the fumes of my feet (refer piccys on left).

Alas, despite the gag order, the 4th rubber was not to be ours with Nosti and DKNY going down in straight sets, but the day still belonged to the Roosters and our semi-finals chances given another shot in the arm (pending peptide and hormone analysis).

a BIG THANKS for interstaters Deano and Debbie for coming along and also Alan, Neeal, Vic, Brian etc...

We need to win one game next week and we're unassailable so Vic, Den, Al and Brian: it's up to you!

John Collins has said that Port will have their best team in V Black Rock and they have beaten them before so we could be 3rd with a good win and play beatable  Mornington rather that unbeatable Martha in the first final.

Teams before last Saturday. Girls are now 47, Roosters 55, Pillow Biters 42 and dunno Bastards.

Captain's Bit:

So after sitting on 1 point and being last after 4 rounds of tennis we are playing finals next Saturday week for the sixth time in a row. In the short history since 09 the Roosters have made the finals each and every season. Congratulations all.

After our final match it's time for trophy night and as usual time to pick a new captain or talk the sucker who's been doing the job to continue.

I strongly recommend that we have a change in "leadership" and perhaps it may be from one of those who routinely have a crack at the captain for not picking the best team in the penultimate round every season. Like there was not a peep after round 4.

As you can see (below) I've now had 3 seasons, Nick 2 and the polak one before he was sacked. Who's up to the challenge?

2009         – Winter Pennant with Tennis Victoria – Men’s Grade 9. Nick Hinneberg captain. Finished top of our overall section and finished equal 3rd in overall grade

2010         – Winter Bayside Tennis Association  - Men’s Doubles section 1 Nick Hinneberg captain finished 3 overall

2011         – Winter Bayside Tennis Association - Men’s Doubles section 1 Mark Balicki captain finished runner-up overall

                 – Summer Bayside Tennis Association - Men’s Doubles section 1 Yuri Worontschak captain. Quarter final loss. Finished 4th.
