You know those old TV Westerns with clouds of dust rolling up when the bad guys roll into town? That was Highett on Saturday. Dry courts, dust, sun… not pretty. In keeping with the Western theme, Forrest was rechristened Hopalong. His bung left knee was back, having caved in after the previous Saturday’s epic. (Hmm; match at home; workplace injury… Anyone know a good compo lawyer?)

So, between them, Hoppy and Dennis (DK) had one good knee. Dr Vic sighed, knowing he had a long afternoon ahead. And Brian? Well, BB was doing his old Worry The Opposition By Keeping Them Waiting trick. Something about Geelong and West Gate and traffic… Sound familiar? Actually, he was holed up in the Highett Saloon, knocking back shots.

Highett had been pencilled in as a win. But with BB missing and two on lame horses, suddenly things looked bad. Real bad.

Especially so when Vic and Hoppy went down in straight sets, Hoppy discovering that mobility is an underappreciated asset on court.

Then BB rode into town and he and DK pulled out the sixguns and took care of business with minimum fuss. So, at half-time, the visitors were one game up.

But then, but then…

There’s always a twist in Westerns, a scene where the gal goes missing or the bullets run out and things look bad. This came when Hoppy and Vic won their first set in the return rubbers just in time to hear that DK and BB had just LOST their first set by a slightly wider margin.

Scores were level! An ugly upset loomed. DK’s expression was even uglier.

Hop and Vic conferred. Go for a quick kill, they decided. A 6-1 second set resulted. Sums were done. DK and BB were rallying, in all kinds of ways. A win now seemed assured. The message to DK and BB was simple: relax! But the boys did more than that. The second set was theirs. Then a third-set comeback was staged, just like Wells Fargo. That they went under (just) in the high-standard third-set tiebreak barely mattered. Doc and Hop tried so hard to impersonate a crowd that DK told them to shut up. So much for gratitude…

Result: 2 rubbers all. AP 5 sets; Highett 4. AP 41 games, Highett 35.

For a side with three crook knees, not a bad afternoon’s work…
