The Gladiators

Venue: Albert Park Lawn Tennis Club
Visitors: Black Rock

Reporter: Nostisimo

11:00am
The temperature was hovering around 36° and rising, strong northerly wind and you could cook a souvlaki on your bonnet. Only the insane would even dare go outside, but yet the Gladiators Nickolaus, Denissopoulos, Solomanix and Bobolas prepared themselves for battle.

The strategy was set and the pairings were decided:
Nickolaus & Dennissopoulos (AKA Dickey Knee or simply DK) - #1 pair
Solomanix & Bobolas - #2 pair

12:30pm
Temperature: 38°
DK warming up on show court #1 with fellow compatriot NB and DK comments “Man, my right knee is F*#@ed, I am struggling to move across” – new strategy immediately came into action.......DK is playing the backhand and any serves down the middle to him – let them go. But DK’s strong willingness and passion to win, popped those neurofin’s (like taking Viagra) and the transformation kicked in. He became a Man!

12:45pm
Nickolaus glued to his mobile phone, racket bag over his shoulder, standing outside the courts getting the download on an incident where tennis player and umpire did not see eye to eye – Yes my friends, we still have those John McEnroe’s out there – God Bless America.

1:05pm
Temperature: Too Hot
The great Solomanix (Brian Berry) rocks up, moustache manicured, looking like he had just slammed down a SOLO – in other words ladies & gentlemen he looked FRESH.

Sweaty jock straps, dickey knees, manicured moustaches and earbashed heads, the gladiators prepare themselves to do battle.

Solomanix & Bobolas
Off to great start, we take the first set 6 – 2. Solomanix was solid on the forehand side, with instinctive finesse and touch at the net – just nice and steady. Bobolas serving into the sun and into the wind, held his serve and results came through.

Set 2:
We had just finished the first few games and then we look across to showcourt #1 to see Nickolaus & Dennissopoulos shaking hands at the net – they were off before you could blink your eye – a great win 6-1/6-0

Nil: rumours abound re his absence. Is he pregnant?
Solomanix & Bobolas continue to play and put in a solid performance to take the 2nd set 6-3.

Change Over
The temperature on the courts was very hot and we all wanted to get off the courts asap.

We changed courts so Solomanix & Bobolas were on show court #1 and we had strong support with Alan, Vic & Nealle present to view the match.

We lost the toss so Black Rock started serving. At 2-1 Solomanix stepped up to the plate to serve and unfortunately dropped his serve for the first time in the match and we go down 3-1. Digging deep, we clawed our way back to break immediately and did not look back after that. We break again and close the set off 6-3.

In the 2nd Set, Bobolas started serving and by this stage he was knackered – old age kicked in. Putting down no 1st serves in the game and throwing in 2 double faults made life tough....Bobolas drops his serve for the first time. Before we realize it, Black Rock shot out to a 3-1 lead and the Coqs were chasing their tail once again. Bobolas had to bounce back and hold and before you realize it, he was down 15:40.

Tired, looking like a red tomato, pissed off that he was in this predicament, Bobolas goes to Solmanix “I am going out wide – look for the down the line”. Slowing the first serve down to a 3 quarter pace Bobolas lands the ball exactly where he wanted it and Solomanix puts away an easy volley. Before the next serve Solomanix advises Bobolas that the next serve should go out wide and Bobolas being a stubborn Greek said “No, he is expecting this serve – I will go the forehand”. Bingo! Black Rock hit the forehand into the net, back to Deuce.
2 seconds after this photo was taken the cake melted..
"and it took so long to bake it and I'll never have that recipe again...Oh No!"
Two first serves later (3 quarter pace) we win the game and the scores are 2-3.

Again we look across to the other courts and there we have it, shaking hands at the net – fantastic result. The boys win 6-1/6-2 and are making their way across the courts and straight to the fridge to attack the Corona’s...bastards

Bobolas goes across to Solomanix and said “The pressure is off us – let’s close this off” Black Rock serve and go 4-2 up....this was the last time they were to win a game. Both Solomanix & Bobolas stepped up to the plate and took control to close the match 6-3/6-4.

Therefore in summary:
6-0/6-1
6-1/6-2
6-2/6-3
6-3/6-4

Old Nick: Carried Again!
It was a great win in very tough playing conditions.

I would like to thank Alan, Vic & Nealle who rocked up and offered their support but the show stopper must go to the Hinneberg Family which produced the best carrot cake ever – it was absolutely mouth watering and fresh. DK & Zo offered watermelon and cantelope, Brian produced the all time favourites party Pies/Sausage Rolls and Nosti provided the Corona’s

Captain'Comments

Ladder before last Saturday

Roosters last week we were at our lowest point. Broken ribs, hamstrings, ACL's and just a dirty week we forfeited. It's amazing how we've not only bounced back but beat a team 4-0 who beat us up 4-0 a couple of months ago. Alan reminds us all that we didn't have a 13 year old the last time but it was still an almighty effort. So from four losses at the beginning of the season (and being last) we're now threatening the top four having beat up #3 4 zip.

The good news is that the back end of the season, the games in 2013, are all against sides we have beaten (apart from the pillow biters who are mince meat next time 'round).

Nick said after the match on Saturday the comradare of this team is worth a number of games every season. We've another shot at the finals so lets steel ourselves for a massive run at the finals.
