GRAND FINAL EDITION

Well Roosters we came into the Grand Final as underdogs and played our heart out.

#1 V#1 pair was for the first half the best match the roosters have ever played Jetsetting Sydneysider Dean and former captain former committee member Nick going blow for blow with the maggot guns.

The rallies were incredible especially the two lefties who were both on fire. Both Dean and Maggot Mark were not used to being beaten up by another lefty with ground strokes to die for. At 2 all the roosters broke their serve and at 3-2 our way the game had all the hall marks of a classic. The games were of a very high standard and the crowd was applauding the great shots.

So are nickname is maggots is it buddy?
Then Nick questioned whether a proper game had been called and the players politely tried to figure out whether the call was correct. It was and at 4-3 their way the whole complexion of the match had change. MCC stepped up a gear and we witness an awesome display of power tennis. Maggot James' backhand was ridiculous and Mark's service often unplayable. Seeing Nick and Dean lose so many close matches  was painful. They lost 10-3. Everyone there including MCC folk all said the match looked like a 10-7 or a 10-8. We had our chances.

At 10-3 which is effectively minus 7 we had a lot to catch up.

On Court 2 (#2 V#2) the Golden Greeks were as they they say in the classics "coming from behind" and true to their high standard pulled out a 10-9 win. But even this score was politely questioned and some negotiation was undertaken to confirm the result. So minus 6 to the roosters at half time.

my knees are melting

The second half and the reverse rubbers (don't try that at home kids) was all about trying to make up for the deficit and Nick and Dean did the right thing and won against the maggots second pair 10-5.
So we were effectively minus one.

Unfortunately the Maggot #1 pair, if it was possible played an even better than against #2 pair Dennis and Nosti and at 9-0 we were all wondering what the afternoon tea was.

Dennis eventually won his service so as to avoid the Coke Zero/ Al J Zero/Donut Club Neilll, Yuri, Alan and Mark are members of and at 10-1 it was sweet (but lo cal) victory to the pesky maggots. By the way it was in round 1 of this season that Al and Mark were 10-0 in both matches. A team record. No shame being beaten up by these two. For Nick and Dean to go down 10-3 these guys had to be something special. Our pair did not play poorly. MCC were just a lot better on the day.

The winter comp is all about accumulating games and unfortunately the maggots had 10 more and were worthy winners.

The maggots #1s were the difference. They have a game of power and finesse and were a decade or two younger than our boys. They did what it takes to win but pull out the big gins when challenged. They hit the ball hard with a ton of top spin and Mark's service/ forehand and James' blistering back hand that are the killers.

So at the end of the day it was 2 rubbers all but a 10 game win to MCC. Congratulations MCC.

The pesky Maggots: well done lads

Thanks to all the spectators who came along. Most are in the pics. Thx heaps. It wasn't difficult to spot the difference between the two team's supporters: we had dad's army and they had ...babes.

The after party was the best. The MCC guys are a great bunch of guys and were very humble in victory. They deserved their grand final victory and we hope to get them back down the track some day.
