Pipping Poopdale

Roosters v Poopdale 4 Aug 2012

Two rubbers all: Roosters 37 games, Parkdale 28

by Al J Zero

This was a day of comebacks. Deano was back from his Pacific Training Camp
while the Golden Greeks, reigning club dubs champs, were back in action together.
Not since Demis Roussos and Nana Mouskouri shared a carefree night of passion
has a Greek liaison sparked so much interest in the Hellenic media. Nosti
was actually a bit late, having conducted an interview in the park with 'Greek
Gossip Today'. This delay was fortuitous, giving DK more time to get bandages
on his knees and a new grip on the handle of the walking frame. Forrest G,
aka Alan, was just glad to be back in action, having been jilted at the altar
the previous weekend due to BB's car trouble.

The opposition: our old Parkdale pals. Top pair Barry and Perry; no. 3 Richard
and No. 4 Big Pete the sight of whom still causes DK and Deano to relive
the horror scene from the motion picture's Finals Moments?.
Deano thoughtfully warmed up by the Yurimeister and Nils (who almost leapt
off the bench when Nosti's interview ran overtime) ? started with Forrest
while the Greeks hogged the glory on Centre Court before a crowd that grew
and grew. Thanks to Joy and Peter and Peter and Michael and Kevin and others
I?ve possibly neglected and, from our own ranks, Yuri and Neill and BB and
Dr Vic (so enthused he was later seen belting balls). Special mentions also
to Debbie and Zo. Indeed, if Nosti and Forrest had been forewarned we could
have had a full house of WAGs.

So compelling was the Centre Court drama that few noticed Deano and Forrest
quietly taking care of the biz against an increasingly bemused Parkdale pair.
With a 10-4 result in the bag, D and F could even sit back and watch the
GGs rally from a parlous position. More rallies than the US Presidential
campaign. Nosti firing himself up as only he can. DK doing a passable Oscar
Pistorius impression. No friends lost in a gallant 8-10 result.

Reverse rubbers were almost a mirror image of the first two. GGs, flicked
to Court Two by the Seven Network, completed Big Pete?s bad weekend (he?s
also a Hawks supporter) by posting another 10-4 win. Deano and F, meanwhile,
fell behind 2-5 (possibly 2-6; we stopped counting) before coming back and
back and as Yuri's heart raced even grabbed a 9-8 lead as the Parkdale
guns lost their cool and even, once or twice, their serve. Before powering
home a bit steadier to squeak through 10-9.

So: a handy win to the home side, though another point woud have been nice.
Still, a win's a win. Season back on track. Finals loom.
Highlights. Easy. Silver medal to Forrest for falling over his own feet or
inexplicably slipping and transforming a regulation overhead into a Funniest
Home Videos pratfall. On Centre Court. Gold medal to Nosti for ending a
stirring, surging rally by allowing a lob to land out. Sound move. Trouble
was, that ball was in, in, oh-so-obviously in. You really had to be there.
If only to hear DK's anguished cry of Nosti!. For the benefit of any spectators
who weren?t sure who the culprit was.

Well done boys.

On we go?

So to this Saturday

Glenhuntly Girls away

a must win game as we're denying the #2 points. Remember it's a top 3 finals and 4th is useless.
before last Saturday
The Team for next week:

Deano's in sydney until 25th August. Come back Deano!

Some housekeeping:

Please let us know who's in/ out for the Summer Comp and how many games you would like to play. The forms are in and we're fielding a team again for the 2012-13 season.

Please keep the Thursday after our last game free as there will be the usual naval gazing and anal-izing of the seasons results over pizza at Basilica after the hit up at 6.30. Most importantly it is an opportunity for a TEAM PHOTO. Even if you can't make it can everyone be at the clubhouse at 7.30. (Nil-get the camera/ make-up ready)

At this dinner we will select the captain for 2012-13 Summer Comp. Please let the blog know if you're interested.

Finally Nick has resigned from the committee and someone has to step up and represent the roosters in his place. Otherwise we really do become an old folks home. After 18 years we also need a new president. Dennis?
