Roosters and Ring-Ins
v Centenary Park, Away, Sat 16 Nov 2013
On Thursday, Yuri started muttering: "Have to get away early on Saturday - going to the Ring Cycle..."
Ring Cycle? Abba's Ring Ring? Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire? Beyonce's Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)?
Try Wagner.
What a cultured crew we are.
And it was the Senior Citizens who took on Centenary Park in leafy East Bentleigh: Yuri, Forrest, Brian and Bruce.
This signified the start of the second third of the comp: we've already played all teams once, we're now into repeats - just like commercial TV.
Into it. Seemed like Y and F had just wrapped up a spirited 6-3 first-set victory when, next door, B and B were shaking hands at the net - a dispirited CP duo tossing in the towel when trailing 0-6 1-4. One CP player muttered about an injured leg but, really, it was clear the opposition was too intimidating. YOU try facing a rampant B and B close up.
Meanwhile on Centre Court, Y and F came within a game of a straight-sets victory. Then, in the tiebreak, a POINT from victory. But no... CP prevailed 10-8 and it was into a third set.
Or was it..? Forrest tried the Hinneberg tactic, offering a match tie-break instead of a third set.
CP turned it down. Then lived to regret it, as Y and F stormed through the decider 6-1.
With CP down to three men and the match effectively over, all interest turned to the last match.
B and B's second rubber. With bragging rights on the line, as B and B were taking on the same opposition that Y and F had softened up.
1/2 the price of ours. |
So. One (dead) rubber to CP. The match to Roosters 3-1. Bragging rights (temporarily) to Y and F.
Showing the difference between the sides, one CP player responded "What the hell's that?" when told the missing Worontschak had rushed off to the Ring Cycle...
On we go.
Next week: at HOME v Black Rock.
Rostered team: Peter J, Sean C, Mark and Neale.
Pls confirm.
