Albert Park v Beaumaris

Well, it’s meant to be a test of character: backing up after a defeat. This was what faced the Roosters after a reality-check outing to Parkdale the previous weekend. A home tie against mid-ranked Beaumaris would test both resolve and team depth.

The Roosters went with a new multicultural mix: Dr Peter (representing the Czech Republic) teamed with fellow European Mark B (Poland). Network Seven insisted they start on Centre Court, meaning Roosters II – Yuri (Ukraine, via Adelaide) and Forrest(Scotland) – took on Bowy’s second duo, who actually proved to be the stronger of the visitors’ pairs, and featured our old mate Spiro. Yes, at least ONE Greek was back at Roosters HQ…playing for the opposition.

Seemed like Y and F were only barely into their second set, having prevailed in the first in a desperately close tiebreak, when the Czech-Poland alliance were celebrating victory – 6-4 6-2. While Bowy’s vanquished pair stuck around to watch their colleagues toiling in the sun, P and M disappeared to the shops. Or maybe to do interviews. On their own, the thought of avoiding a third-set epic spurred Y and F on to a close but welcome 7-6 7-5 victory.

In the reverse rubbers, with Nils providing support (and the odd piece of advice), the CR-Poland alliance again proved too strong, chalking up a 6-4 6-1 win. On Centre Court, meanwhile, Y and F recovered from a sloppy start to prevail 2-6 6-1 6-3. Completing a clean-sweep for the Roosters, who are clearly back in town.

Thanks to supporters Peter,Michael, Sue and Brian. Plus Roosters Nils, Vic and Brian.
