Finals Loss -a sad day

Dennis crying. The big sook!

Match Report by Alan

Semi-Final: v Parkdale at Hawthorn 17 March 2012

Well. In retrospect it's clear what happened.

The intensive planning/ training/ preparation that got the Roosters to the
finals was derailed by rain on the first weekend in March.

That Dendy Park washout threw everything out; compounded by a long weekend
the following Saturday.
Could Usain Bolt run a first-round heat when he had planned for a Prelim?

Of course not.

Last Saturday afternoon, the same team that had studied puddles at Dendy
Park a fortnight earlier reassembled at Hawthorn. But only after the Skipper
had been forced to stare down an insurrection; a senior team member wanting
to tinker with selected team. This was mutiny. This was treason. This was...
ah, don't get me started.

So. First lot of rubbers. The Golden Greeks separated: Dennis with Dean;
Nosti with Alan.
Dean had to battle not only instructions in Greek but also experienced Parkdale
pair Barry and Perry. What next - Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men?
D and D went down; N and A came through in similar margin. So match still
very much alive at half-time, giving out cheer-squad - Michael, Peter K and
Peter the Pres, plus Skipper Yuri (BUT no other team-members, which was noted)
- plenty to feel enthusiastic about.

Got even better when, in reverse rubbers, D and D stormed through first set
6-0 while N and A, digging deep, snaffled their first set 7-6.
This could have been enough. Should have been enough.
Suffice to say that BOTH pairs crept to within a couple of games of a glorious
triumph in their respective second sets. But went down in three.

So. A bee's dick defeat. That 1-3 rubbers score was so nearly 3-1 to the
Roosters.

But wasn't.

So roll on winter.

One last thought: points earned at the START of a season are worth just as
much as those won/lost at the END of a season.

On we go....

HIT UP IS ON FOR

Captain's Report.

Thanks to all the roosters for playing this year. We should have won on Saturday. Games score was an amazing 49-47 and if our number one pair (who were 6-0 in the first game and 9 games up! with rubbers even) could of beaten their pretty ordinary #2 in the tie break in the 3rd (and they should have) it would have been 48-48 and a tie break decider! We had to drag out the rule book for that one.

But we didn't and now we move on to the winter comp in search of our first men's premiership in 20+ years.

I'd like to single out Dean for his contribution this year. He's been a stalwart at training and easily our best player. I know he's doing it tough because he didn't bring his best game in for the final but Deano -you're the heart and soul of the team and we would have probably dropped into div2 yet alone not even made the finals without you. DEANO FOR PRESIDENT!

We have a revolving captaincy policy so because most of us will be there on Thursday night we should decide on a winter captain then. I'm happy to continue but also more than happy for someone else to have the grief. Alan?

As you know our glorious site: albertparkroosters.com  is now online and we need contributions both financial and literary from all the guys.

It costs chicken feed -$30-40/ year (as opposed the thousands the club is spending and it's not even up after 2 years -and can you possibly imagine how utterly bland it will be) to keep the site running (domain name, url redirection etc etc) so I suggest a $2 fee per season for each playing member and I'll maintain the site. It's a great resource as it will have all the googlemap court locations, rules, contacts all in iphonable access ready for those awkward rainy days.

Finally, it's been an honour to captain such a great bunch of renegades and misfits and if and when we do win a premiership I look forward to getting a rooster tattoo on what ever part of my anatomy I choose to with the lot of you after a legendary bender.
