JUNIOR COACHING 2010

Our Saturday morning junior program has continued its success this year beginning with the round robin tournament over four age groups to celebrate the clubs 125th anniversary on February 22nd. We had 43 very enthusiastic juniors involved on this morning and was well supported by the club putting on a sausage sizzle. This event was a great success.

The success of the junior program is evident with 24 of the juniors that I coach during the season playing in the Bayside Districts Junior competition. They play for 2 clubs; Middle Park Tennis Club or Port Melbourne Tennis Club and the competitions are played either on Saturday or Sunday.

Playing their first ever season of competition and winning section 2 for Middle Park Tennis Club were Leo Monichino, John Batsakis, Antoine Terreaux and Isabella Michael. They beat Kooyong in the final. This is a fantastic result and our congratulations go to these players.

JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPONSHIPS

The Junior club championships were held over 2 Saturdays, the 28th November and 5th December.

We had 100 entries overall making this our best championships ever!! Not only were the entries excellent, all the events ran really smoothly even with a few rain interruptions.

I was most impressed with the closeness of the matches and the rallies that were battled out. Part of what I have been teaching those who I coach is to chase down everything and don’t give up on the point. This helps to put pressure on the opposition and force errors. As a result of this tactic some of the rallies were just amazing and it really was a great sight watching these kids carry out this important instruction so well.

Once again this event was really well supported by the club and a big thank you to Peter Davidson for providing the icy-poles. The kids love them!

I look forward to another successful year next year and the clubs continued support with this junior program.

Nicole Bruce-Smith,
Albert Park Lawn Tennis Club Coach.
